Job Description
PURPOSE
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and implement sustainable practices that minimize the organization’s environmental impact.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Regulatory Compliance and Monitoring
- Conduct regular environmental audits and assessments to ensure adherence to Zimbabwean environmental laws, mining regulations, and international best practices.
- Monitor air, water, and soil quality, managing waste disposal, emissions, and rehabilitation efforts to prevent environmental degradation.
- Prepare and submit compliance reports to regulatory bodies, addressing any non-conformities promptly.
Sustainable Practices Implementation
- Develop and execute environmental management plans, including biodiversity conservation, dust suppression, and erosion control in mining areas.
- Collaborate with mining contractors to integrate sustainable technologies, such as water recycling and low-emission equipment, into daily operations.
- Lead initiatives for environmental impact assessments and mitigation strategies for new projects or expansions.
Risk Management and Incident Response
- Identify environmental risks, such as those from fault-prone stratigraphy or waste dumping, and implement preventive measures.
- Coordinate emergency response plans for environmental incidents, ensuring quick resolution and minimal impact.
- Facilitate training programs for staff and contractors on environmental awareness and best practices.
Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting
- Engage with local communities, government agencies, and internal teams to promote environmental stewardship and address concerns.
- Contribute to sustainability reporting, tracking key metrics like carbon footprint reduction and rehabilitation progress.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Degree in Environmental Science or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental management, preferably in mining or resource sectors.
- Familiarity with Zimbabwean environmental regulations and tools like environmental impact assessment software is desirable.
- Proven experience in contractor collaboration and sustainability projects.
