Job Description

MARITIME TRAINING PROGRAMME (MTP)

Work Integrated Learning (WIL): Small Vessel Regime x 10

The Department of Transport (DoT), in partnership with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), invites applications from suitably qualified unemployed seafarers to participate in a 24 month Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme under the Small Vessel Regime.

PROGRAMME DURATION

  • 24 Months (Fixed Term Contract / Training Programme)

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Successful candidates will be required to:

  • Assist with the inspection and surveying of small vessels
  • Participate in scheduled training and skills development activities
  • Support compliance monitoring in line with maritime safety standards
  • Participate in maritime safety awareness and outreach initiatives
  • Compile and submit basic inspection and compliance reports
  • Support operational duties under the guidance of a Mentor / Surveyor

PLACEMENT LOCATIONS

Successful applicants will be placed at one of the following locations:

  • Richards Bay
  • Durban
  • East London
  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • Mossel Bay

STIPEND

  • Participants will receive a monthly stipend of R10 000 for the duration of the programme.

Please note: This is a training and development opportunity and does not guarantee permanent employment upon completion.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Certificate of Proficiency (COP), Diploma in Maritime Studies or a related maritime qualification
  • A BSc in Nautical Science will be advantageous
  • Must be an unemployed seafarer or have a maritime qualification in a related field
  • Aged 18 to 35 years
  • Must meet applicable maritime medical fitness requirements
  • Basic knowledge of maritime safety legislation and regulations
  • Good communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to work in inland waters (recreational dams), port, and coastal environments
  • Preference will be given to suitably qualified unemployed seafarers
