Bulk Materials Handler - Mechanical Engineer
Job Description

Core Purpose

To deliver mechanical and bulk materials handling engineering on mining and port infrastructure projects, from pre-feasibility and feasibility through to detailed design and execution support. The role ensures fit-for-purpose design substantiation, disciplined documentation, effective multi-disciplinary coordination, and professional client engagement aligned to GIBB standards.

Key Performance Areas

  • Engineering delivery: Produce and review BMH and mechanical designs, calculations, specifications, datasheets, equipment schedules, and drawings to the required stage-gate maturity.
  • Project lifecycle support: Contribute to conceptual studies, design verification, detailed design, and execution support with clear traceability from requirements to deliverables.
  • Tendering and procurement support: Prepare scope documentation and tender packs, support technical clarifications and adjudications, and ensure requirements are technically complete and commercially defensible.
  • Interface and stakeholder coordination: Manage technical interfaces across disciplines, contractors, and client representatives to reduce rework and protect programme.
  • Quality, compliance and safety: Apply statutory requirements and applicable standards, execute work under controlled document management, and ensure designs are substantiated and auditable.
  • Reporting and controls: Provide accurate progress reporting, support schedule updates, maintain risk and decision registers, and work within allocated budgets and change control.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • BEng or BSc (Mechanical Engineering) or BTech (Mechanical Engineering).
  • ECSA Candidate Engineer registration, with a clear plan towards professional registration.
  • Formal belt conveyor training such as Conveyor Manufacturing Association - Diploma in the Design and Operation of Belt Conveyors is advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years relevant consulting experience in bulk materials handling and mechanical engineering, preferably in mining and port environments.
  • Ability to contribute to proposals, technical presentations, and client engagement.
  • Demonstrated delivery of front-end study work and design work from conceptual to detailed design.
  • Conveyor design and verification exposure, including preparation and review of mechanical datasheets, equipment schedules, and bills of quantities.
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary project teams and managing technical interfaces.
  • Site exposure including inspections, condition assessments, and execution support during manufacturing, construction, or commissioning when required.
