Key Tasks & Accountabilities
Leadership
- Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing underwriting team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Set clear performance objectives and manage delivery against agreed targets, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
- Conduct performance reviews, providing coaching, feedback, and development support to enhance individual and team capability.
- Effectively manage team dynamics, recognising and leveraging individual strengths to optimise team performance.
- Actively promote staff morale and drive high levels of employee engagement, creating a positive, motivated, and inclusive work environment.
- Ensure the team operates in line with agreed SOPs, service standards, and governance requirements, maintaining consistency and quality of output.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement, actively identifying and implementing operational efficiencies to enhance performance and service delivery.
- Drive a customer and broker-centric mindset within the team, ensuring service excellence and responsiveness.
- Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to ensure alignment, effective communication, and delivery of shared objectives.
- Lead change initiatives within the underwriting function, ensuring successful adoption of new processes, systems, and ways of work.
Underwriting
- Have a broad understanding of Underwriting across Commercial and Personal Lines of business
- Have industry knowledge and applying underwriting by leading a team on the following functions:
- To manage underwriting of new and existing business within Delegated Authority limits, applying strong technical knowledge to ensure appropriate risk assessment, pricing, and acceptance.
- Apply underwriting expertise across commercial and personal lines to ensure sound technical decision-making and consistency in execution.
- Take accountability for underwriting portfolio performance, using a deep understanding of risk drivers to monitor exposure and implement corrective actions.
- Implement underwriting strategies and actions, leveraging technical expertise to achieve targeted rates, loss ratios, and sustainable performance.
- Conduct regular portfolio reviews, applying technical insights to ensure delivery against profitability targets, including loss ratios and growth objectives.
- Manage the end-to-end underwriting process (new business, renewals, endorsements, and cancellations), ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with established procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to the team, ensuring high-quality underwriting decisions and consistency across the function.
- Ensure delivery against SLAs and service standards, maintaining operational efficiency and a high level of service.
- Analyse and interpret underwriting reports and management information, using insights to inform decision-making and performance management.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and brokers, applying underwriting expertise to support business objectives and strengthen partnerships.
General
- Uphold ethical standards and ensure adherence to Shari’ah principles in all relevant business practices and decisions.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Grade 12
- Insurance qualification or technical qualification advantageous
- A formal business degree/qualification will be advantageous
- Min 3 years technical expertise in insurance business across Commercial and Personal Lines of business
- FAIS compliant, 60 credits
- Experience in leading and managing teams is required
- Proven experience with brokerages will be an advantage
- Must have RE5. RE1 will be an advantage and a requirement after appointment
