Job Description

Advance your career with BDO Wave South Africa as an Internal Audit Executive based in Cape Town. As part of our UK and Ireland Risk Advisory Services (RAS) team, you will support the delivery of internal audit, assurance and advisory engagements for UK clients, working closely with colleagues across the UK and South Africa.

You will gain exposure to a range of businesses, industries and risk environments, building your commercial understanding, technical skills and professional judgement. With guidance from more experienced colleagues, you will manage assigned tasks, build effective working relationships and contribute to high-quality engagement delivery.

The role is suited to someone with 1–2 years’ relevant experience who is ready to take greater responsibility for their own work while continuing to learn from senior team members. You will receive coaching and feedback to help you develop the technical, communication and project-management skills needed to progress.

Job Requirements

Roles and responsibilities
• Support internal audit, risk, assurance and advisory work across planning, fieldwork, reporting and follow-up, completing assigned tasks to agreed objectives, timelines and quality standards.
• Perform walkthroughs, risk assessments, controls testing and data analysis, maintaining clear working papers to support findings.
• Develop an understanding of relevant professional standards and engagement-specific legislative, regulatory and governance requirements, including UK requirements where relevant, and apply them with guidance.
• Identify potential control weaknesses, discuss root causes with senior colleagues and contribute to practical, proportionate recommendations.
• Prepare clear draft reports and supporting materials for review by more senior members of the engagement team.
• Build effective working relationships with UK clients and colleagues across the UK and South Africa, communicate progress and issues clearly, and participate constructively in virtual meetings and presentations.
• Manage assigned tasks and priorities, raise delivery risks promptly, and support engagement administration, progress tracking and budget monitoring.
• Share knowledge with less experienced colleagues and contribute positively to the team, while seeking and acting on coaching and feedback from senior colleagues.
• Support proposals, client relationship activity, knowledge sharing and the development of reusable tools, methodologies and insights.
Education and Skills
• A relevant bachelor’s degree in Internal Auditing, Accounting, Finance, Financial Management, Business Finance, Business Management, Economics or a related commerce discipline, completed or due to be completed before joining.
• Progress towards a qualification such as CA(SA), CIA, CISA, ACCA or equivalent.
• Typically 1–2 years’ relevant experience supporting internal audit, risk, assurance or advisory engagements, with exposure to planning, fieldwork, testing and reporting in commercial, regulated or non-profit organisations.
• An inquisitive and proactive mindset, with developing knowledge of risk management, internal audit and systems or controls testing, and the confidence to ask questions, assess evidence and contribute to recommendations.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate evidence, interpret data and reach clear conclusions with appropriate guidance.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to support stakeholder interviews, document findings and prepare concise, evidence-based draft reports.
• A collaborative and organised approach, with the ability to manage assigned priorities, work effectively with UK-based engagement teams and client stakeholders, and respond positively to coaching and feedback.
• Experience using data analytics or AI-enabled tools to support audit scoping, testing, evidence analysis or reporting would be desirable.
