Job Description

The Desktop Support Engineer is responsible for resolving end-user support issues across desktop, mobile device, network and audio-visual environments. The role provides technical coordination, advice and recommendations in support of projects, services and process-improvement initiatives.

The successful candidate will champion user-productivity solutions, contribute to innovation and support the implementation and standardisation of desktop-related hardware, software and processes, while maintaining appropriate security, compliance and governance standards.

The role requires reliable personal transport and extensive travel to support AFGRI operations across Mpumalanga. 

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is mandatory for external candidates.
  • Internal candidates must have Grade 12 and a proven track record in IT desktop support.
  • The following professional certifications are required:
    • ITIL V4/V5 Foundation;
    • Microsoft 365 Fundamentals;
    • CompTIA A+; and
    • CompTIA Network+.
  • A minimum of five years’ working experience in an IT environment.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in IT infrastructure technical support, specifically involving:
    • IT hardware;
    • software applications; and
    • end-user support.

Additional requirements

  • Must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, eMalahleni (Witbank), Bethal or the surrounding areas.
  • Must have own reliable transport.
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively across the AFGRI footprint in Mpumalanga.

 

Key Performance Areas

  • Deliver excellent, proactive and timely customer service within the Desktop Support function.
  • Resolve incidents and service requests with due consideration for business impact, technical quality and the customer experience.
  • Identify recurring incidents and service trends and contribute to root-cause analysis and permanent resolution.
  • Work collaboratively with relevant IT functions, including Problem Management, Change Management, Asset Management and CMDB teams.
  • Ensure that desktop support activities comply with approved architecture, security, governance and IMACD requirements.
  • Support the timely deployment of operating system, application, firmware and security updates.
  • Identify and remediate non-compliant devices, configurations and software installations.
  • Maintain accurate asset, configuration and system information, where applicable.
  • Identify and recommend service, process, automation and technology improvements.
  • Contribute to continuous service-improvement initiatives and the reduction of manual effort, repeat incidents and operational risk.
  • Identify innovative technologies, services and solutions that improve productivity, efficiency and the user experience.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, standardised processes and a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

 

Technical Competencies

  • Strong general IT technical capability.
  • Sound awareness of cyber-security trends and technology solutions.
  • Good understanding of applicable ISO standards and frameworks.
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge of:
    • Microsoft technologies;
    • Microsoft 365;
    • Cisco technologies;
    • HP technologies; and
    • Active Directory.
  • Desktop engineering knowledge and practical experience.
  • Hardware, software application and end-user troubleshooting capability.
  • Understanding of desktop security, patching, endpoint compliance and governance requirements.
  • Ability to identify recurring technical issues and contribute to root-cause analysis.
  • Generalist technical knowledge that enables the incumbent to bridge gaps between vendors and guide vendors in meeting business requirements.
  • Ability to assess and recommend new technologies, automation opportunities and improvements to the end-user computing environment.
