A hospital mechanical artisan maintains, repairs, and installs essential mechanical, HVAC, and plant equipment to ensure a medical facility operates safely and continuously
Job Description
  • Install and repair mechanical systems and equipment, including refrigeration, air conditioning, vacuum, medical gas, compressors, autoclaves, boilers, and hot and cold-water systems, in accordance with technical specifications, manufacturer guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Test and calibrate mechanical systems and equipment after installation or repair to verify proper functionality.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of plant rooms, equipment, and machinery in accordance with service schedules or as directed by the Supervisor or Manager, to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
  • Report on the condition, performance and functionality of the plant and machinery.
  • Plan and implement preventative maintenance activities in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the setup of mechanical infrastructure during facility expansions or upgrades.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and perform corrective maintenance to minimise downtime of critical hospital systems.
  • Monitor the quality of contractor work performed on hospital mechanical systems and equipment and report any deficiencies to the Technical Supervisor/Manager
  • Manufacture basic parts needed, using the available equipment and adhering to safe operating standards and limitations.
  • Ensure proper storage, usage and maintenance of all mechanical tools and machinery.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and procedures when performing maintenance work.
  • Maintain complete and accurate record-keeping for all maintenance work and services performed.
  • Perform ad-hoc duties as and when required.
  • Execute preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections, fault finding and repairs on mechanical systems and equipment in accordance with approved maintenance strategies, maintenance schedules, manufacturer requirements, statutory requirements and Melomed Technical standards.
  • Conduct routine condition checks on mechanical systems, plant and equipment, identify deterioration, abnormal operating conditions, recurring failures and potential technical risks, and report findings to the Technical Supervisor/Manager.
  • Accurately record maintenance activities within the approved maintenance management system, including faults identified, work performed, corrective actions, parts and materials used, equipment downtime and relevant asset condition information.
  •  Support asset identification and physical verification activities by confirming equipment information, location and condition, and report discrepancies or changes for updating in the asset and maintenance management system.

 Report recommendations for repair, refurbishment or replacement based on observed equipment condition, recurring failures or performance issues to the Technical Supervisor/Technical Manager for further assessment.

Job Requirements

Grade 12

Trade Test Certificate in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Qualification in Mechanical Engineering would be advantageous

Trade Test qualification in Electrical with Wireman’s licence would be advantageous

Minimum of 3 - 5 years’ experience in a similar position

Experience in the installation, servicing, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical faults efficiently 

Knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety regulations and safe work practices

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team

Must be physically fit and able to work at heights, in confined spaces, or under pressure when required

Must be computer literate 

Must be available to work overtime, shifts, and / or be on standby as operationally required

Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between sites, if required
