Purpose
To perform advanced serological veterinary diagnostic testing and ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of laboratory operations. The role includes technical signatory responsibilities, laboratory supervision, mentoring team members, and driving continuous improvement of laboratory methods and systems.
Responsibilities
Testing & Analysis
- Perform routine and advanced veterinary serological diagnostic tests.
- Independently troubleshoot testing issues to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Verify and interpret test results against reference standards.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all work complies with OHS, SANAS, ISO 17025, and Quality Assurance requirements.
- Implement corrective actions and maintain acceptable proficiency scores.
- Achieve and maintain a 100% score in proficiency scheme participation for serology testing.
- Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Department of Animal Health applicable to diagnostic laboratories.
Method Development & SOPs
- Update and improve serological testing methods based on industry developments.
- Write, review, and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Act as technical signatory for 80-100% of departmental tests.
Turnaround Time Management
- Monitor and meet departmental turnaround times (TATs).
- Proactively communicate delays and corrective actions to management.
Instrument & Equipment Oversight
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Report calibration, maintenance, and servicing requirements to management.
Stock & Cost Control
- Maintain optimal stock levels for testing activities.
- Manage consumable usage and support cost-control initiatives.
Training, Supervision & Mentorship
- Supervise laboratory staff within the serology department.
- Complete required technical and compliance training.
- Mentor, coach, and support the development of junior team members.
- Assist in competency assessments and training programs.
Client Interaction
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients.
- Provide technical guidance relating to serology testing where required.
Operational Support
- Ensure compliance with AssureCloud policies, systems, reporting standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Utilize IT systems effectively and contribute to efficient laboratory operations.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- National Diploma or Degree in Veterinary Technology.
- Registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a veterinary laboratory environment, with significant exposure to serology testing.
- Experience as a SANAS Technical Signatory (advantageous).
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience (advantageous).
- Experience working within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory environment.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong serological diagnostic and analytical skills.
- Sound knowledge of SANAS accreditation requirements and ISO 17025 standards.
- Knowledge of Department of Animal Health requirements for veterinary diagnostic laboratories.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and coaching abilities.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to manage laboratory turnaround times, quality metrics, and operational priorities.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
