Job Description

ROLE PURPOSE

The Senior Metallurgist will lead a processing team to ensure efficient operation of the Karo Concentrator. They will provide metallurgical leadership during the construction, commissioning, start-up, and optimization of the PGM concentrator plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable achievement of design throughput, recovery, and concentrate quality targets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies opportunities that would be input into operational and capital budgets for the department.
  • Support plant construction by reviewing process designs and ensuring installation meets metallurgical requirements.
  • Lead and support commissioning of crushing, milling, flotation, thickening, and tailings systems.
  • Develop and implement commissioning and start-up procedures.
  • Monitor and optimize plant performance, focusing on throughput, recovery, concentrate grade, reagent consumption, and operating costs.
  • Manage metallurgical accounting, reconciliation, and performance reporting.
  • Conduct metallurgical investigations, plant surveys, and process improvement projects.
  • Oversee laboratory activities, sampling systems, and metallurgical test work.
  • Develop operating procedures, process standards, and operational readiness programs.
  • Promote compliance with safety, health, environmental, and quality standards by ensuring that the department complies to all the established safety, health, environmental, legal and other requirements so as to maintain the good corporate image of the organization as well as contribute to the organization’s attainment of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 17025 and OHSAS 18001 certification
  • Co-ordinates process and maintenance requirements to ensure that effective maintenance is carried out for the whole plant so as to attain the set production targets.
  • Implements and maintains sound people management practices to ensure a productive workforce.
  • Carries out continual improvement projects in the plant in order to improve the efficiencies so as to ensure business sustainability.
  • Ensures that the tailings dam is constructed and managed professionally as per design.
  • Ensures that there are adequate operating procedures for all critical tasks carried out in the plant and ensures that all the employees have been trained on the tasks they carry out
Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or related discipline.
  • MBA will be an added advantage
  • Minimum 8-10 years of mineral processing/metallurgical experience.
  • At least 5 years in PGM concentrator operations.
  • Proven experience in concentrator commissioning and plant start-up.
  • Experience with:
    • Crushing and milling circuits
    • PGM flotation circuits
    • Thickening and tailings management
    • Metallurgical accounting systems
    • Process optimization
  • Previous greenfield project experience highly desirable.
