Job Description

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

The Aviation Environmental Compliance Trainee will be trained to

  • Review Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) reports
  • Implement Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)
  • Manage the regulatory oversight of South African Civil Aviation Regulations (SACARs) and South African Civil Aviation Technical Standards (SACATS) governing Aviation Environmental Protection (AEP).
  • Work programs related to ICAO Annex 16 - Environmental Protection - Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) such as aircraft emissions, aircraft noise, CO2 emissions, climate change and global warming.
  • Provide assistance or input during oversight, auditing and approval of aerodrome and aeroplane operators’ environmental plans.
  • Conduct AEP audits of airports to assess their compliance with environmental standards.
  • Ensuring the co-ordination, of all aspects of AEP interventions with ICAO, International Air Transport Association, Airport Council International, Department of Transport, Department of Fishery, Forestry and the Environment, Treasury, Rural Development and Land Reform, Air Traffic Service Providers (ATSPs), Aerodrome Operators, Airlines, etc.

AEC Operations

Learn to:

  • Develop Master Surveillance Plan to ensure comprehensive industry oversight and surveillance in line with the set objectives/performance indicators.
  • Plan and execute inspection schedules regarding compliance with aerodrome environmental management in accordance with quality management procedures
  • Plan the implementation of CORSIA-related requirements for aircraft operators
  • Facilitate training on ACT-CORSIA
  • Assess Emissions Monitoring Plan and Emissions reports for international aircraft operators
  • Review Environmental Impact Assessment reports in relation to Civil Aviation Regulations for comments 

Administration

  • Handle AEP administrative duties
  • Plan AEP Inspections including travel arrangements
  • Assist with maintenance of Aviation Environmental Protection (AEP)-related documentation 

Policy Management

  • Assist in the development of Regulations (SACARS and SACATS)
  • Assist in Programmes related to ICAO-Annex 16 on Environmental Protection
  • The development and drafting of new or amendment proposals of regulations and technical standards related to Annex 16 and develop guidance material, where necessary.
  • Learn the regulatory process on evaluation of related Government Departments/ Provincial/ Municipal laws, such as land use planning, noise abatement operating procedures, emission control through operational practices, etc.
  • Adhere to all Quality Assurance standards in compliance with ISO 9001/2015 within the area of AEC

Liaison and Consultation

  • Assist in coordinating activities with the industry in relation to technical/ scientific bodies on AEC through SACAA approved processes
  • Learn to engage in SACAA AEC partnerships and cooperation with national stakeholders, international, regional and industry organisations.
  • Assist in addressing public enquiries on AEC issues.
  • Participate in AEP awareness training with the industry

Communications and Safety Promotion

  • Participate in AEP workshops, Environmental Compliance Committee with affected parties and learn to develop material required by stakeholders to communicate AEP matters.
  • Learn to develop guidance material to promote environmental standards and objectives to industry stakeholders. 

 

 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

EDUCATION 

MINIMUM

  • National Diploma in Environmental Science/Management or Equivalent Related qualification

IDEAL

  • Degree in Environmental Science/Management or Related
  • Knowledge of National Environmental Act and EIA regulations will be added as an advantage

 

EXPERIENCE

  • 1 year experience in Environmental Compliance

Aviation Environmental Compliance experience would be an added advantage
